The Minneapolis Arts Commission has selected four public art projects and organizations to be recognized with the second annual MAC Awards. The selected projects include a stained glass window (Awakening, by Reynaldo Diaz and Connie Beckers), a series of photos (Hopes and Dreams by Sean Smuda), a 350-foot painting (the Loring Ramp), and a theater company that ensures that all Minneapolis residents have access to high-quality, innovative work (Ten Thousand Things Theater). The winners were recognized at the Uptown Art Fair on the performance stage (in the Old Chicago parking lot, 2841 Hennepin Ave) on Friday August 6 at 7:00 P.M. The award ceremony is free and open to the public.
Award for Community Involvement in Public Art
Recognizes a work of public art that has stimulated residents/youth to participation in the arts, while encouraging cooperation and coordination between artists and the community.
- Project: “Awakening,” Loring Park Community Arts Center. The Friends of Loring Park commissioned this prominent quatrefoil stained glass window to celebrate and honor the flora and fauna of Loring Park. Designed and built by local artists with over 1,000 hours of time spent assembling approximately 3,000 pieces of glass, the window has a unique, Art Deco inspired design representing various elements of Loring Park both literally and figuratively. Carefully selected types of glass create a variety of lighting effects throughout the day and over the seasons.
- Artist: Reynaldo Diaz (design) and Connie Beckers (construction)
- Commissioning Agency: Friends of Loring Park
